This once near-extinct game antelope has been reintroduced across South Africa and boasts hundreds of thousands.

Blesbok live on the open savanna and are primarily grazers. They form a herd consisting of females (ewes) and juveniles. Males (rams) tend to be solitary.

This changes when single males are disturbed during hunting. As a result, ensure that you take the animal of choice when blesbuck hunting.

Trophy Hunting Blesbok

As available water is essential to this species, hunting near the approaches to water holes can prove productive.

The best time for hunting blesbok is when they are grazing in the morning or late afternoon.

Like many other species, the blesbok lays up during the hottest afternoon.

Nick Bowker Hunting has two large herds of Blesbok, well over a hundred strong, including white Blesbok mixed with common Blesbok.

The Blesbok is very wary and difficult to approach. Longer shots will, therefore, be required. This may be one of the few times you will shoot prone.

Blesbok, however, bunch together, and shooting the right one requires careful communication with your professional hunter, Nick Bowker. Hunt blesbok by setting up ambushes, looking down valleys, and spotting and stalking.

Distances are longer on the open grasslands, the Blesbok’s home, and we recommend the flat shooting 7mm magnums or even the 300 magnums for hunts.

For those hunters who wish to avoid going through the red tape of bringing a rifle into South Africa, Nick Bowker has a 300 magnums fitted with suppressors.

Mounted on the rifles are Swarovski Z8 tactical scopes. We have hand-loaded Hornady ELD-X ammunition. The rifle, including ammunition, is free of charge as part of all hunting packages.

The Blesbok is one of the fastest-breeding game species in Southern Africa. He is seen by many as the perfect animal for the first-time hunter in Africa.

The price difference between a common and a white is now relatively small.
Blesbok Hunts with Nick Bowker

When judging the trophy quality of Common Blesbok, it’s essential to look at the width of the boss, the color of the horn, and the overall length.

Mature males will likely have a whitish tinge about two-thirds of the way up the horn, While females and younger rams have much darker horns.

The neck should be pronounced and stand out against females and young rams.

Also, mature rams will stand out in the herd and be more visible in horn length and shoulder height. The difficulty comes when approaching solitary rams, where you will rely on your professional hunter.

Judging the trophy quality of this game species can be challenging at times, especially for lone bulls.

As with all African animals, a thick, heavy, darkened neck is the first sign of maturity and often the most visible maturity characteristic when observing at a distance.

Also, look at the color of the horns. An old bull will exhibit at least two-thirds of the horn as an off-white color.

Look at the bases and ensure they are solid and prominent.

The hook in the horns is where the hidden length lies and differentiates a good bull from an outstanding bull.

A good symmetrical shape with smooth tips signifies an old bull and a trophy worth considering.

Exciting Facts for Game Hunts

Trophy shot in the Eastern Cape South Africa
  • As the name suggests, they are never far from water.
  • Waterbuck are daytime grazers.
  • They can evade predators such as lions by rushing into the water.
  • Predatory cats are often reluctant to get their feet wet, even if it means missing out on a meal.
  • They have a lot of hair around their necks, making them look like they should live in colder climates.
  • As the hair is hollow, it allows for extra buoyancy when swimming and lets the waterbuck float.
  • They release a special oil over the hair, which repels the water and prevents it from becoming saturated.

  • The oil has a foul smell, and it was thought to be distasteful to crocodiles for a long time, thus keeping the waterbuck from being eaten.
  • This theory, however, has been disproved of late.
  • A more credible theory is that the oil acts as an insect repellent and reduces the number of ticks that the waterbuck have.
  • The trademark white ring around the waterbuck’s hindquarters is a follow-me signal.
  • If one of the groups spots a predator and runs, the rest will follow to avoid becoming dinner.
  • Hunting involves a lot of glassing on savanna hillsides to find the ideal elusive waterbuck bull.

About the Waterbuck for Hunters

Description for Your Safari

Waterbuck safari hunting in South Africa with Nick Bowker

Common Waterbuck inhabit scrub and savanna areas along rivers, lakes, and valleys. A social animal, the Waterbuck, may form herds of 4 – 15 individuals.

These groups are either family groups with females and their offspring or bachelor herds.

Males start showing territorial behavior at five years but are most dominant from six to nine.

Males reach approximately 50 inches at the shoulder, while females reach 47 inches.

The Waterbuck is one of the heaviest antelopes.

A newborn typically weighs 30 pounds, and growth in weight is faster in males than in females.

Males typically weigh 450 – 600 pounds, and females 350 – 450 pounds.

They are of a robust build. The shaggy coat is reddish-brown to gray and becomes progressively darker with age.

Males are darker than females. Though thick, the hair is sparse on the coat. The hair on the neck, however, forms a long shaggy beard.

The long, spiral horns curve backward, then forward. Found only in males, the horns range from 22 to 30 inches in length.

The length of the horns is mainly related to the bull’s age but tips do wear down.

A rudimentary horn in the form of a bone lump may be found on females’ skulls.

Information for Hunting Safaris

Hunting bug Waterbuck bull safari style with Nick Bowker.

African animals’ bodies comprise about 70% water; it is no surprise that African mammals have had to develop tactics for keeping hydrated in a predominantly hot and dry environment.

They are very water-dependent, being especially prone to dehydration.

Always within a 5-mile radius of water but usually less than 2 miles from water, and will drink several times daily.

These game animals are primarily grazers and feed on medium to short grass near water.

Their digestive systems are adapted to coping with a high amount of roughage, although they select the more palatable protein-rich grasses.

They will also browse grass during the dry months. Grass has lower moisture content than browse, and they need to drink regularly to help digest.

Because they drink frequently, their droppings are usually wetter than other ruminants, and the pellets tend to deform and stick together.

After a gestation period of nine months, a single calf is born, or rarely twins.

The mother hides the young in a dense thicket or long grass for a few weeks after birth before joining the herd.

Calves are born during the summer months in South Africa, while mating occurs in winter.

Mating can happen during the year.

About the Nyala for Hunters

Description of Your Game Quarry

Good quality Nyala trophy

The Nyala is mainly active in the early morning and late evening at all times of the year. A shy animal, preferring thick cover and will only be seen in open spaces in the early morning or just before sundown.

The Nyala shows no signs of territoriality, and individuals’ areas can overlap.

They are very cautious creatures. Old males tend to live alone, but single-sex or family groups of up to 12 individuals can be found together.

These inhabit thickets within dense and dry savanna woodlands.

The Nyala is a spiral-horned antelope and is between a bushbuck and a kudu in size.

The male stands up to 47 inches; the female is up to 35 inches tall. Males weigh 180 – 220 pounds, while females weigh 120 – 150 pounds. The life expectancy of the beautiful Nyala is about 19 years.

The coat of females and juveniles is rufous-brown. However, it grows a dark brown or slate gray in adult males, often with a bluish tinge.

Young males and females have at least ten or more white vertical stripes on their sides. Other markings are visible on the face, throat, flanks, and thighs.

Stripes are significantly reduced or absent in older males. But both sexes have a dorsal crest of hair running right from the back of the head to the end of the tail.

Males have an imposing long “beard” along the midline of their chest and belly.

General Information for hunting Nyala

Trophy taken in South Africa

Males begin to lose their stripes as they start to mature. This is because juvenile males disguise themselves as females avoiding any jealous behavior from adult males.

Nyala antelopes have tiny hooves for their body size. As they walk, the hind feet step into the position where the front feet have just been known as registering and reducing the amount of noise made with each step.

The bases of the back of the ears are white, as is the underside of the fluffy tail, which is raised when the animal takes fright.

The fluffy tail acts as a ‘follow me’ symbol to the young.

The whitetail’s flash also provides a stark target to a predator, but as soon as the Nyala stops, the tail is dropped, and the predator’s focus is lost.

The disruptive camouflage markings then come into play, further concealing the curious Nyala from the predator’s view so long as it remains still.

The same applies to the Nyala pursuit, where much patience is required.

The thicket habitat of the Nyala provides an ideal cover for the calves when they are born.

In the first two to three weeks of their lives, they remain hidden to allow them to build up their strength before moving around with the adults.

The mother visits her calf for feeding and grooming. If it becomes threatened, the calf instinctively flattens itself onto the ground. Due to its lack of scent at such a young age, it can easily avoid predators’ attention this way.

Kudus have fantastic eyesight, and the nickname “Grey Ghost” is for a good reason; a kudu can vanish into thin air.

It’s rare for a hunter to shoot a kudu on the first stalk.

You may have to take a more extended shot to get your kudu.

Kudu is indigenous to the Eastern Cape, South Africa, and occurs in significant numbers.

They browse in the early morning and late afternoon, usually resting during the day’s heat.

Like many species, these majestic antelope form family groups of approximately ten individuals, primarily cows, calves, and young bulls.

Mature bulls only join the herd during the mating season. Hunting often involves stalking a lone bull.

Judging your dream Kudu

Big kudu hunting with Nick Bowker in the Eastern Cape.

Southern Greater Kudu is available in fenced areas in the Eastern Cape but costs substantially more.

Eastern Cape Kudu boasts a much darker and blacker coat than its cousin, the Southern Greater Kudu, and at times, the males will carry an imposing, impressive beard running down the length of the kudu’s neck.

From late March to June or even July, bulls will lose the fear of open country and travel great distances searching for females during the rut.

Judging the trophy quality of kudu bulls can be very difficult at times.

Always ensure the shapes of the horns are wide and symmetrical with white tips.

Consider the depth of the curls, as this is where the real hidden length lies.

Any mature Kudu is an impressive trophy and the pride of many hunters worldwide who have visited southern Africa on safari.

  • Fights would take the form of lunging, horn clashes, and wrestling with locked horns, and the latter may result in the death of both when their horns become locked together in the battle.

  • This is due to significant predation of the bulls and deaths at the end of the breeding season caused by exhaustion and injury.

Wounded Kudu can keep running for many miles without stopping or resting.

Bulls are much larger than females.

The bulls also have large manes running along the underside of their necks. The long spiral horns straightened would reach an average length of 45 inches.

A 375-caliber rifle is the minimum legal requirement to hunt buffalo.

Buffalo hunting areas are widespread across the Eastern Cape. Generally, shooting Buffalo in South Africa is in a high-fenced area, and the size of the safaris areas varies widely.

If you want authentic free-range Buffalo, you must hunt with outfitters in Zimbabwe, Mozambique, or Tanzania.

However, the trade-off is that buffalo hunting safaris in South Africa are substantially cheaper on an all-in basis.

The day rates in countries like Zimbabwe for Buffalo are expensive and dramatically increase the overall hunt costs for outfitters.

Day rates reflect the taxes and fees paid to the government. In most cases, the land is not private, and the government owns the animals.

In South Africa, most land area is private, including the game.

Buffalo hunting in South Africa is still tremendously exciting and hunted by spot and stalk.

Your professional hunter is required to have a dangerous game license to hunt Buffalo on your Southern African safari.

In particular, the Buffalo bulls have learned to avoid humans, feed at night, and hide in thickly wooded areas during daylight, making buffalo safaris very tough.

Shooting Buffalo is considered a dangerous game rather than a plains game.

As with most African game hunting, shot placement should always be in the bottom third of the shoulder. As a result, a well-placed shot, a rifle of .375 caliber, is adequate for shooting the Buffalo.

Nick Bowker Hunting has 375 rifles and ammunition for hunters not wishing to go through the red tape of bringing a rifle to South Africa. I’ve included for you the rifles and ammunition free of charge.

Robert Ruak famously wrote, “When coming face to face with a buffalo bull, he will look at you as if you owe him money”;… enough said.

A buffalo bull is the number one desired African trophy for international hunters worldwide dangerous animals to hunt.

A wounded buffalo bull can sometimes circle back, wait for the hunter along its track, and charge the hunter without warning.

Loud death bellows are the best sign of a dying buffalo, but not all will give this bellow.

With age, one will find old solitary bulls move off from the herd; these buffalo bulls are called “Dagga Boys” due to their enjoyment of regular mud baths, leaving caked mud on their backs, giving the appearance of dried cement (“Dagga”).

These bulls are the most challenging and fun to hunt and may sometimes form small “Dagga” buffalo groups.

A hard and solid boss for a buffalo is the number one sign of a great trophy. I want you to know that your professional hunter will be invaluable here.

Sometimes, these old bulls won’t carry a spread beyond 30 inches, as horns will wear down with age. These are, in fact, the best and most memorable trophies on a buffalo trophy hunt.

About the African or Cape Buffalo

Cape buffalo hunting safari.

Buffalo habitat includes mixed scrub woodland areas. They will occasionally venture onto plains only if there is an ample abundance of grasses but typically avoid such open areas to avoid becoming an easy target for their predators.

One of the “big five” African game, buffalo is known as “the Black Death” or “Widow Maker” and is widely regarded as a dangerous animal.

According to some estimates, buffalo gore and kill over 200 people yearly.

Buffalo kills more people in Africa than any other animal. However, hippos and crocodiles have the same claim.

Buffalo bulls are notorious among big-game hunters as dangerous animals, with wounded animals ambushing and attacking pursuers.

African Buffaloes weigh 1,100 to 2,200 lb, with males typically larger than females, reaching the upper weight range.

The horns of a buffalo form entirely when the animal reaches five or six years, but the bosses do not become “hard” till 8 to 9 years old.

In buffalo cows, the horns are smaller and do not have a boss.

African Buffalo are frequently preyed upon by lions. As a result, African Buffalo are known to rush to defend another herd member if a predator attacks it.

In a large group, buffalo can also ward off the pride of preying lions.

The Buffalo has many characteristics similar to the Blue Wildebeest but is a very different hunt!

I have hunted with Nick twice; this summer will be the third time. I have also hunted with five other operators in Africa.

First off, the accommodations are excellent. Each room had its bathroom—plenty of hot water and water pressure. The meals are excellent. I can not remember eating so much great meat. Camaraderie is excellent. If you need something or have a recommendation that has been acted on to get things done to make your stay more enjoyable

Nick and his staff are friendly, professional, and very knowledgeable. Nick and his staff will go at your speed. It’s your hunt. If you want to walk a lot or a little, it is up to you. Regardless you will get your animals. A lot of freedom and relaxation. A great selection of animals for the trophy hunter.

I can tell you first hand the time and effort anyone puts into finding the right outfitter for an Africa safari adventure. I personally put in about 70+ hours of research, talked and messaged countless but no one came close to what Nick Bowker was able to offer. So Im writing this review to help anyone that was in my shoes years ago. Nicks expertise in identifying a well mature bull will amaze you and his technique in stalking these animals are commendable.

Nick is well educated in what you want to hunt the terrain you will be in and the habitat they utilize, Nick practices great wildlife conservation. I promise you will see several shooters but he will hold out for that perfect trophy that you are after. I have recommended Nick to several people now and have meet great people the last time I was there whom I still keep in good contact with still.

I understand anyone can write a one time review but I have hunted with Nick on two separate occasions now and in the planning process of my 3rd hunting trip.

I Highly recommend Nick for your Africa adventure what ever it my be and if you have any questions ask Nick for my contact information.

#anotherhappyhunter East Texas to the Eastern Cape – Kevin booked a hunt with Nick Bowker Hunting on BookYourHunt.com, and here’s what he says:

“What I liked: The PHs were extremely knowledgeable, and their ability to spot, quickly and honestly judge, and effectively stalk the game was incredible. The sheer volume of animals seen was mind-blowing, as well as the variety (we saw 38 species of mammals alone). I could not be more pleased with Nick and everyone involved with Nick Bowker Hunting.

What I didn’t like: The flight was long but a very small inconvenience for the hunt of a lifetime!”

#anotherhappyhunter – or, to be more precise, bowhunter. Levi booked a hunt with Nick Bowker Hunting and here’s what he says:

“Price obviously always enjoyable, means I can shoot more. I also enjoyed the large and multiple concessions they have so I did not feel like I was hunting the same spot everyday.

Also the only place I have hunted in SA with 100% fair chase, we had a herd of Lechwe jump the fence on to land we could not pursue and had to move on to a new location.

Greatest part was their working great with my 14 year old daughter and even more they worked to get me within 60 yards of a Sable, Lechwe and Warthog. I took with my new Bowtech RevoltX80 bow. That is some work when they do not put out food, they do not control water, have no blinds and is low fence, a real spot and stalk time.” Congratulations, Levi!

Heading over for my second trip to the Eastern Cape with Nick Bowker Hunting. Our last experience in 2012 was such a phenomenal experience we didn’t even consider looking elsewhere for another South African experience. In 2012, we filled every tag with phenomenal animals while Nick provided such a great experience with a personal touch. Unbelievable hunting with a huge array of animals.

Food, wine and accomodations greatly exceeded expectations. And, the expert knowledge Nick provides for hunters was exceptional. Nick’s experience and knowledge help you understand what you are looking for and is very clear (prior to shooting) what a trophy is versus a non-trophy. I believe this is so valuable on an experience like this as we came across so many animals (that all looked like trophies to me) but Nick and his trackers clearly directed us to the trophies that we were after.

I look forward to reporting on “Round 2” with Nick Bowker Hunting upon our return. Until then, enjoy some of our photos from 2012!!

10 days was just perfect-plan on spending 2 weeks with shooting, packing, travel, jet-lag etc.

Then there is the list of animals we could to harvest. It is daunting. They run from small-hard to see and hit, to huge-easy to see and harder to kill. The diversity of habitat in the East Cape of South Africa is astonishing, from low, dark, river bottom to high baldy mountain tops within an hour’s drive.

Our host, Nick Bowker, and his brother Rob, rugged 5th generation South African “farmers” of English decent, were most gracious and met us at the “Tumbo” Airport in Port Elizabeth on the East Cape. This is a small airport on the order of Colorado Springs or Corpus Christi. Guns, ammo, luggage all right there and a great relief after a nearly 24 hours of flight from Minneapolis, Houston, Atlanta, Johannesburg and finally Port Elizabeth.

Coming to South Africa is probably on every hunters bucket list. If you are looking to come but skeptical on the outfitter to use? Give Nick Bowker a call! You booking your hunt with him will be the best decision you can make! Nick has extensive knowledge of these game animals, their habitats and what is a good quality trophy!

My experience here with Nick has left me 100% satisfied! Nick and I had so much In common there was hardly any silence between us (LOL). This was a plus for me coming here alone and not knowing if it was going to be mostly business and awkward silence. However, that was not the case at all. Nick and his family made me feel very welcome! All of them are great company, fun to be around and talk with. We shared countless laughs around the fire each night.

The Kudu hunt was by far the best! Nick went above and beyond to make sure I got a great trophy. We passed up on several good bulls. Yes, They were shooter bulls and I assure you if Nick was not who I booked with I might have took the shot on one that size. Nick would say that’s a good bull or that’s a shooter but I seen better around here.

I have had the best time here! I promise you that 8 days seems long when you arrive but will go so fast! and before you know it your packing up for the trip back home.

If you are planning this hunt and You booked with Nick you won’t be disappointed! If your looking to do this hunt but don’t want to come alone call Nick and have him contact me. I’ll be more then happy to make another trip back here and hunt with you.

Nick is by far the best hunting outfitter I have ever met. Both my hunts with him were an absolute thrill and success. He is very attentive to both nature and the client. I always learned something new. Nick’s hunting farm is huge, and you will encounter a very broad range of animal species and nature biomes. Should you plan to hunt in South Africa, Nick is your guy!

I have hunted with Nick 2 times (2004 & 2008) and can’t wait to go back. I consider him a great friend and look forward hunting in 2014 with my daughter Lacey and friend Tim if this year goes well!

My wife, Donna, and I hunted with Nick Bowker in May 2010. Once on the ground in South Africa with Nick, everything was great. On our ten-day safari, we took ten animals, including a great Kudu, Waterbuck, and Nyala. We plan to return to hunt eland, gemsbok, and another bushbuck.

Our stalks, which ranged from a couple of hundred yards to more than a mile, were most often productive, and his knowledge of the game was uncanny. Nick and his family control vast amounts of great hunting property, and he knows where to go for a good specimen of any animal available in his area.

Nick and his staff made our stay a wonderful experience. We were treated like the king & queen of the manor. The food was exceptional, and the ambiance of the farm was delightful.

We look forward to seeing him again in the spring of 2012.

Wonderful trip at Olivefountain Ranch. The hunting has been phenomenal (list of 8 animals collected in 6 days), huge areas to hunt and the quality of animals is excellent. Accommodations and meals are above my expectations. The hunting guides have been second to none. I’ll visit again!
Update with 2nd visit in July 2022 for the glamour antelope species this trip, Red Lechwe, Sable, Kudu, Waterbuck, Gemsbuck, Red Hartebeest, Burchell’s Zebra, warthog, Bushbuck and a piebald Steenbuck. Successful on all and missed a nice Common Duiker. Again it was a great safari with Nick Bowker and my PH Ben Pringle.

Enjoyed the accommodations and services provided. Sad to see it end, weather was cool mornings and pleasant afternoons. Quality of game hunted was excellent. Many more new concessions hunted this time, which I really liked. I believe I’ll be back again. A few pics added.

My Father and I just finished a 20 day Safari with Nick Bowker and his Family. Nick and his family run a perfect well oiled hunting operation. I had the privilege to have Gary Phillips as my PH. The knowledge he holds of the local lands, game, and customs cannot be duplicated. Nicks equipment is perfect. My dad and I both used Nicks custom 300 Winchester rifles. Shots ranged from 50 yards to 550 yards. Equipment worked perfect. The food and drink at Nicks Lodge was fantastic! The accommodations were amazing! Do not pack heavy! Your laundry will get done daily!!

The game in Nicks hunting area are known to be bigger and horn growth is known to have more mass and length due to minerals in the ground and genetics. I have had the privilege to be able to hunt and guide in many different camps in many different countries. Nick Bowker and his crew is undeniably some of the best in the business. Please reach out to Nick and ask for my contact if you would like to chat!

Client Reviews
2012 & 2019

Dan

“One of my elk hunting buddies met Nick at an SCI event in 2001. He went on a trip in 2002 with Nick and had a phenomenal experience.

During several elk hunts, he always said, “We should go to South Africa, where we could shoot 6-8 trophies for the cost of one of these elk hunts” (minus airfare). It was tough to believe that was true, as I always heard how expensive SA hunting is.

Because I trusted his judgment and experience, three of us tried it in 2012 (two of us for the first time, and one person went for the second time).

Shortly into this 2012 trip, I knew I would be returning. Honestly, due to our experience, we didn’t even look at or consider going with a different outfitter.

I am sure there are several excellent PHs, but what Nick provides is precisely what I want. No high-fenced hunting, all fair chase with the ability to see thousands of animals daily. Nick’s knowledge and skills allow us to identify shooters and position us for ethical shots.

His accommodations are perfect for what I want. Not a 5-star lodge with 6, 8, or 12 other hunters, but just our group. Extremely comfortable accommodations, top-notch staff, and fantastic food and drink!

Never in my two trips with Nick have we seen another hunter in the field. His access to free-range hunting is excellent. I guess you could say I was lucky to know the right person that happened to meet and go on a Safari with Nick!”

Client Recommendations

Randall

“I met Nick in 2002 through a friend of mine. I was looking for an Elk hunt, and my friend Steve P. suggested I meet Nick Bowker, a Professional Hunter from South Africa. Nick was coming to town for a Safari Club event and the Outdoorsman show in Reno.

Nick and I met, and we talked about the services he offers. We discussed expectations and set some parameters. He gave us great info regarding shipping gear and guns to RSA, and he set up the balance of in-country travel, lodging, meals, trackers, skinners, etc.

He picked us up in Port Elizabeth and took us to his ranch near Bedford. It’s the perfect place to get away from a hectic life and relax while having a world-class experience hunting African game.

The lodge is quaint and is precisely what I expected. The meals are incredible and were much welcomed at the end of each day’s adventures. As far as hunting goes… well, you will see more animals in 1 day than you will see in 10 years of hunting in the US. RSA is awesome.

Client Recommendations – My time with Nick was idyllic

We crawled through thickets, climbed atop outcroppings, and had a great time spotting and stalking. Nick is the consummate professional and exceeded my expectations. With his expertise and guidance, I bagged some incredible plains game, and we did our best to eat our bellies full of it every day.

My tracker and skinner were Alvin and Room. I swear they can spot the smallest spec in the Bush and get you right where you need to be, and the rest is up to you. My time with Nick was idyllic, and he is a lifelong friend because of it. If you want a great hunting experience with a guy you can trust, look no further than Nick Bowker, Professional Hunter!”

Why Nick Bowker Hunting?

Nick Bowker, your outfitter, and guide will be with you every waking minute of the day.

Nick conducts free-range hunting in a low-fenced environment with over 30 species. He has 25 years of experience guiding and outfitting and has been very successful with first-time African hunters.

Your first day

You will fly into Johannesburg and catch a connecting flight to Port Elizabeth, where Nick will meet you. A two-hour drive to Hopewell lodge, where you will spend the rest of the hunting safari.

On arrival at the lodge, we have a light lunch, and rifles will be checked for zero. Later in the afternoon, we will set off for the first hunting excursion.

A typical days hunting

  • Up at dawn for a cup of coffee and a snack.
  • Set off to our hunting area for the targeted species.
  • All hunting areas are within half an hour’s drive.
  • Generally, we will target the brush-dwelling animals such as the spiral horns in the very early mornings and late evenings when they come out to graze.
  • We would target Plains Game animals during the day as they are easier to find.
  • Many hours are spent glassing animals before mounting a stalk on a selected quarry, so a high-quality pair of binoculars is a must.
  • Typically, we find an elevated position and glass the surrounding valleys in search of a Trophy.
  • We would then set up a plan and begin our stalk.
  • Alternatively, we may try and set up an ambush.
  • Generally, return for a big brunch around 11h30.
  • Sometimes we will take packed lunch and be gone for the whole day.
  • Out again in the afternoon hunting.
  • We have dinner around a fire, discussing the days hunting and making plans for the next day.

Hunt in South Africa – A Guide to South African Hunting Safaris

A hunt in South Africa should be on all hunters’ bucket lists and will be an unforgettable experience. A South African hunting safari offers a wide variety of species in 9 different provinces.

Introduction to Hunting in South Africa

South African sable antelope hunt.
South African Sable Antelope hunting safari.

More than 50 species of game are on offer. The big five may also be hunted. South Africa has become the premier hunting destination in Africa and offers first-world hospitality and infrastructure.

Getting to South Africa is easy, and visitors from the United States or European Union do not require a visa. See our detailed planning and information guide for the first-time African hunter.

Hunting in South Africa is conducted Safari Style,” where hunters drive around searching for plains game. When sighted, hunters stalk on foot. Alternatively, hunting is from an elevated vantage point, and a trophy is spotted in the thick brush and then stalked. Bow Hunting is from a hide overlooking watering points.

Why Hunt South Africa?

South African Kudu hunting.
South African Kudu hunting.

More than 10,000 hunters visit South Africa every year.

South Africa has an estimated 25 million head of game in the country versus the 1950s when less than half a million individuals were left.

A hunt in South Africa is more affordable, with a greater variety and number of animals than anywhere else.

Any big game hunter should visit South Africa at least once for an African safari. Hunters have various hunting packages and different hunting experiences to choose from.

Furthermore, superior infrastructure versus any other African country and inexpensive air travel make South Africa an unforgettable experience.

Visiting South Africa also provides a unique opportunity to see the Big Five and tour our famous National Parks.

In addition to the world-famous Kruger National Park, South Africa is home to nearly 150 other National Parks and reserves, including those dedicated to nature, marine life, forestry, botany, and other unique interests.

South Africa shares a special place in the hearts and minds of hunters and non-hunters.

Getting to South Africa

South African Gemsbok safari hunt.
South African Gemsbok safari hunt.

First-world airports and easily affordable travel make South Africa a convenient and trouble-free hunting destination. There are daily flights between the US and Europe and South Africa.

Although relatively long, the flights are very affordable and comfortable. Johannesburg is the gateway to Africa and is where most international flights land.

Delta and United now have direct flights from the United States to Capetown, where you can catch a domestic flight.

There are both direct flight options, and if you prefer to break the flight up, there are options through Europe or the Middle East from the United States.

Only Airlink will fly your guns inside South Africa. This is very important when booking your flights. Your connecting flight from Johannesburg to Port Elizabeth (Now called Gqeberha) should be Airlink if you carry rifles.

With internet search websites booking flights has never been easier. Others may prefer the security of a professional to book their flights and assist with all travel plans.

We would suggest a specialized hunting travel agent such as Gracy Travel. Getting to and from South Africa should not cost more than $1500 to $2500.

Landscape

The Eastern Cape boasts the second-largest number of outfitters and has a unique topography. The Karoo in the northern part of the province is arid with vast plains.

As you move south into higher rainfall areas, the topography changes to semi-wooded areas and valley bushveld. The vast diversity of habitat results in a broad range of plains game animals versus some other provinces. Many species have been reintroduced and bred.

Eastern Cape hunting

The uniqueness of hunting in the Eastern Cape is the number of different species that can be taken or seen on any day. Specialist animals include the Eastern Cape kudu, slightly shorter in horn length than its Northern cousin.

Caracal hunting and bushpig hunting with hounds is also an Eastern Cape specialty, along with hunting rhinos using a Vito dart. Other specialties include the mountain zebra, grey rhebok, and cape grysbok.

Shooting distances tend to be longer and around two or three hundred yards.

Getting to the Eastern Cape.

Hunters will typically arrive at Johannesburg international airport (OR Tambo international) and then take a short domestic flight to Port Elizabeth or East London, where their outfitter will me them at the airport and drive them to their designated hunting area. Typically around a two-hour drive.
